Univation was initially formed in 1997 as a joint venture. In May 2015, The Dow Chemical Company obtained complete ownership of Univation Technologies, LLC, with Univation becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow. Univation's headquarters is based in Houston, Texas, U.S.A..

Almost 50 years of PE process innovation stands behind Univation Technologies. In the late 1960s, a method using chromium and Ziegler-Natta catalysts in the gas-phase UNIPOL™ PE Process was invented to produce high-density PE (HDPE). In the late 1970s, that knowledge was extended to the use of Ziegler-Natta catalysts to make linear low-density PE (LLDPE).

In the mid-1990s, the first commercial single-site metallocene catalysts were developed for use in the UNIPOL™ PE Process. Under Univation's stewardship, numerous catalyst and process enhancements have taken place. These include the development of metallocene-based bimodal catalysts which enable the production of bimodal HDPE resins in the single-reactor platform of the UNIPOL™ PE Process.
